Somewhere right now a knowledge worker is looking at 47 open tabs and cannot close a single one. Not because each is urgent — most have not been touched in days — but because closing a tab feels like throwing away a thought.
Tab overload is not a discipline problem. It is a predictable collision between how browsers store things and how human memory works, and it has been measured. Here is what the research actually says, what it costs, and the one design principle that resolves it.
Why we keep tabs open
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon ran one of the first deep investigations of tab behavior in over a decade, published at CHI 2021. They found that 50.7% of surveyed users considered tab clutter a problem and roughly 25% had experienced a browser or computer crash caused by too many open tabs. The deeper finding was about function: tabs simultaneously serve as bookmarks, to-do lists, reminders, reading queues, and reference material. They were never designed to do any of those things well.
Two mechanisms keep the pile growing. The first is the Zeigarnik Effect, identified by psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik in the 1920s: people recall unfinished tasks markedly better than completed ones. Every open tab registers as an unfinished task, so dozens of them generate a persistent low-grade cognitive load — your working memory quietly tracking incomplete intentions you are not consciously thinking about.
The second is fear. As Carnegie Mellon's Aniket Kittur put it, people feared that as soon as something went out of sight, it was gone. Participants were overwhelmed by their tab count and still refused to hide tabs, because hidden meant forgotten. That fear is well calibrated. Browser history is unreliable, bookmarks become graveyards, and there is no trustworthy middle state between open and consuming memory and closed and probably lost.
Why ADHD makes it sharper
The connection between ADHD and tab hoarding follows directly from the condition's cognitive profile. ADHD involves challenges with working memory and executive function, so tabs become cognitive scaffolding — an external extension of a memory system that cannot be relied on internally. Every open tab is a thought you cannot afford to lose. That is adaptive behavior, not pathology.
The joke that an ADHD brain is like a browser with 37 tabs open lands because it is often literally true. What the numbers show
- 50.7% of users call tab clutter a problem; about 25% have crashed a browser over it (Carnegie Mellon, CHI 2021, N=103).
- 1 in 5 people juggle 11 or more tabs at once, with Millennials and Gen Z most likely to sit at capacity (Shift, 2026 State of Browsing Report, N=1,000 U.S. adults).
- 62% report recurring digital burnout, with tab overload named as a contributor (Shift, 2026).
- After an interruption it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully refocus (Mark, Gudith and Klocke, UC Irvine).
- The average knowledge worker toggles between applications about 1,200 times a day (Harvard Business Review, 2022), and earlier work by González and Mark found workers spend under three minutes on a screen before switching.
One important nuance cuts against the doom framing. A 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that digital hoarding does not inherently cause overload. When saved information is organized and accessible, it supports learning and productivity. The line between productive collection and destructive hoarding is not how much you keep — it is whether the system you keep it in can give it back.
What it actually costs
Attention. Twenty open tabs that you dip into even half of means ten context switches in a session. The 23-minute figure measures full refocus rather than total lost output, but the cumulative fragmentation across a day is substantial, and tab overload is one of the most common triggers for it.
Machine performance. Each tab runs its own process. Modern pages consume 100-300 MB apiece, so 20 to 30 tabs routinely puts Chrome in the 4-8 GB range, and extreme counts push systems toward full memory utilization and crashes. Chrome's Memory Saver and Edge's Efficiency Mode sleep inactive tabs and genuinely help, but they mitigate a symptom. The browser was never meant to be a storage system.
Mental load. The stress compounds because people read the problem as personal failure. The research points the other way: it is a mismatch between a tool's design and a user's cognitive needs. The anxiety is not about the tabs. It is about the unprocessed commitments they represent.
The principle: separate saving from viewing
Before the fixes, the failures. Closing your tabs ignores every reason they are open. Extensions that cap tab count force premature decisions and create anxiety. Bookmarking everything strips the context — a bare URL without the surrounding tabs or the reason you opened it is usually useless a month later.
What the Carnegie Mellon work and its successors converge on is a single design principle: separate the act of saving from the act of viewing. Capture the whole browser state — every tab, its context, and your intent — so you can close everything knowing it restores completely. That answers the Zeigarnik Effect (the task is saved, not abandoned) and the out-of-sight fear (the information is preserved and findable) at the same time.
Strategies that follow from the research
- Build a session-save habit. At the end of each work block, save the whole session rather than leaving tabs open as reminders. This is the move that converts unfinished into stored.
- Use five tabs as a check-in, not a ceiling. When you pass five, pause and ask whether you are using these or hoarding them. Awareness without the anxiety a hard limit produces.
- Keep research and execution apart. Open tabs for the active task; save tabs for reference. The moment you open something just in case, file it to a session instead of the tab bar.
- Review weekly instead of purging. Go through open tabs once a week and decide: act now, save it, or close it. Anything untouched for three days is almost always safe to save.
- Externalize without fragmenting. If tabs are your working memory, do not stop — upgrade the storage. Save sessions with a note about what you were thinking and what came next. Voice notes work especially well here because they capture the associative thread faster than typing does.
- Cut involuntary switching. Close email, chat, and social tabs during focused work, and split contexts across windows or browser profiles. Every visible tab is a potential interruption even if you never click it.

Browser-native features help at the margins. The fear has changed shape
Tab anxiety used to be about loss — one crash could erase hours of research. Today people are not afraid of losing information. They are afraid of drowning in it. The modern tab hoarder does not have too few places to save things; they have too many, spread across bookmarks, read-later apps, note tools, screenshots, history, and the tabs themselves.
Storage is solved. Retrieval is not — knowing something you saved three weeks ago exists somewhere, with no idea where. That is why the useful tools now compete on organizing and resurfacing rather than saving.
